Formed in 1949 by Professional Fencing Masters, the British Academy of Fencing (BAF) is an organisation dedicated to the formation and coach education of fencing Instructors in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
National Fencing Coach Roger Crosnier and Amateur Fencing Association President Charles de Beaumont revived the Company of the Masters of Defence of London which King Henry VIII originally founded in 1540 to regulate fencing instruction in England. Today, it continues that legacy as the only UK body that consistently trains instructors from beginner level to Maitre D’Armes.
Today’s Academy drives progress and adapts constantly to meet modern needs. It delivers structured courses and exams that guide students through clear qualification pathways in Foil, Epee, and Sabre—from Level 1 to the prestigious Diploma. The BAF Diploma earns global recognition and grants full membership status within the Academy
