Hosted by the British Academy of Fencing, the symposium will be a perfect opportunity to reconnect with old members and new. It is also totally Free for existing members. For those staying forthe AGM the following day, there is also the opportunity to meet up for a social meal in the evening.
If you know of any fencing coach who is not a member of the Academy, please bring them along as attendance at the Symposium will count towards the annual membership fee if they wish to join.

Graham Stretton: Less is More – (More or Less !)
In this practical, sword-in-hand session, Graham Stretton explores how simplicity over complexity can unlock more effective learning in fencing, enabling the fencer to develop. Engaging with concepts in this interactive session will promote dynamic learning and collaboration. You will be encouraged to participate in open discussions, share diverse perspectives, and challenge assumptions. Through self-analysis and reflection, coaches will leave with fresh ideas for streamlining lessons while helping fencers build greater confidence and control.
Bio: Graham Stretton is a Level 5 British Fencing Master and lead coach developer, who delivers and assesses advanced coaching qualifications. He co-authored the British Fencing Weapon Specific Level 3 (WS3) course, focusing on holistic athlete development. Stretton coaches at Leicester Fencing Club and the BF Partnership at CHCC and holds senior coaching education roles. His diverse background as a retired HE Programme Leader in Interior Architecture and Spatial Design and a Trustee of Interior Educators strengthens his creative and effective coaching delivery.

Adam Blight — Using Statistical Bout Analysis with Developing Fencers
Showcasing real-world examples of statistical bout analysis to assist developing fencers. Adam Blight explores practical examples of bout analysis, the common tactical behaviors seen in new and developing fencers. He explores the interventions and actions the coach can make to bring about greater insight and understanding. He will also detail approaches for group sessions, enabling fencers to gain insight and better appreciation of the tactical components of the fencing bout — concluding with a live practical demonstration.
Bio: Adam has coached professionally for 30 years, representing Britain, Ireland, and Taiwan at major international events including World, European, and Asian Championships. His foil and epee fencers have won national titles from U10 to senior level, earned medals at international competitions, and competed at the 2012 Olympics. Many have represented their countries across age groups. Adam has also contributed as a coach to the British Fencing’s Athlete Development Programme, supporting performance standards and long-term athlete development at every stage.

Howard Wheeler — Understanding UK Product Regulations for Fencing Equipment
Coaches and organisers share legal responsibilities when supplying or recommending fencing equipment — and the regulations can be complex. Howard’s presentation demystifies the key UK requirements around protective equipment, electrical and radio-based devices, and related standards. This session will help ensure you understand your duties and can make informed, confident decisions about the equipment used in training and competition.
Bio: Howard is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). He has been working as a consultant for Finch Consulting Ltd since 2015 as an advisor and trainer on equipment safety and CE/UKCA marking. A recreational fencer and occasional coach, he has been a member of the BAF since 2004.

Jonathan Katz – We coaches are ‘active ingredients’ in coaching environments
Jonathan supports athletic growth and development across a wide range of performance environments – development to elite contexts. Drawing on the experience from supporting NGB’s, athletes, coaches and the wider performance environment, Jonathan will focus on how coach-athlete relationships shape and influence the coaching experience.
Bio: Jonathan, PhD AFBPsS FCASES, is a Consultant Psychologist. BPS Chartered Psychologist. HCPC Registered Psychologist and CASES High Performance Sports Accredited. He completed his Full Diploma in 1994 and went on to maintain a theme of developing coaches ever since that includes formal coach education and mentoring. He has supported development, performance and high-performance fencing through coaching youth, senior and veteran fencers. He has coached at World Cups, European and World Championships. Additionally, he has coached at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships since 1998, with four championships as Team England Head Coach.
