Cost

The membership fee costs £20 per year.

Who may apply for Membership?

  • All qualified coaches may apply for membership of the BAF.
  • For holders of qualifications NOT issued by the BAF, it shall be at the discretion of the Committee to decide on both acceptance and at what level of membership should be offered to the applicant.

Please note: The final decision on every application to join the BAF shall remain with the Committee.

Membership categories

Membership of the BAF is highly prized. As well as denoting professionalism, potential employers recognise and value the status of fencing coaches holding BAF qualifications ‘Associate’, ‘Member’, ‘Provost’, ‘Maître d’Escrime’ and ‘Master’ (Maître d’Armes).

Master (Maître d’Armes)

Fencing Coaches who have passed The Academy’s Diploma Examination, Written Papers and Practical Examinations in all three weapons, or those who hold equivalent qualifications accepted by the Committee.

Maître d’Escrime

Fencing Coaches who have passed the Diploma Examination of The Academy at one or two weapons, or those who hold equivalent qualifications accepted by the Committee.

Provost

Fencing Coaches holding the Provost Certificate of the British Academy of Fencing or who have passed The Academy’s Advanced Examination Written Papers and Practical Examinations in all three weapons or those who hold equivalent qualifications accepted by the Committee.

Member

Fencing Coaches who have passed a British Academy of Fencing Level 2 or 3 Examination or those who hold equivalent qualifications accepted by the Committee.

Associate

Fencing Coaches who have passed the British Academy of Fencing Level 1 Examination or those who hold equivalent qualifications accepted by the Committee.

Retired

Members who are no longer active in coaching.

Overseas

Members who have had a close relationship with The Academy and who reside abroad.

Vice-Presidents of Honour
Life Members
Honorary Members

Holders of non BAF coaching awards may be accepted for membership only at the discretion of the committee. Any holders of non BAF coaching awards who have any questions, doubts or uncertainties about obtaining qualifications in our system or about joining the Academy are urged to get in touch with the President of the Academy.  We are very happy to help you and to answer any questions you may have. Each enquiry will be treated in the strictest confidence.
